“Is That Watercolors?” – Nine Colors, Infinite Possibilities

Dear Gallery Owner,

The question I love most from patrons is, “Is that watercolors?” That moment of surprise and curiosity is at the heart of my work.

I’m Timothy D. Thomas—a professional watercolor artist, art teacher, and author of Watercolor Methodology:A Process for Painting Anything. I am also a disabled U.S. Navy submarine veteran and proud member of Audubon Artists, Inc., one of America’s most respected art societies.

My art comes from a story of discipline, perseverance, and intentional limitation. After decades as a designer, illustrator, and educator, I developed a personal painting method built around just three curated sets of three high-quality, professional pigments—nine colors in total. These colors are selected not only for their hues but for their unique properties—their granulation, transparency, staining qualities, and behavior on paper—which allows me to build luminous layers, preserve clean light, and create visual harmony without muddiness.

My method focuses not just on what color to use, but also which property of that color to employ at each stage of the painting process. This intentional approach guides every brushstroke and wash, producing depth and clarity that surprises many who see my work. Over more than thirty years, I have refined this process, and when teaching, I emphasize the motto:

“Watercolor Success Isn’t Magic—It’s Method!”

Why My Collection Fits Your Gallery
My paintings combine technical mastery, emotional narrative, and a distinct philosophy of working within creative constraints to produce unexpected beauty. Patrons are drawn in from the first question—“Is that watercolors?”—and leave with a new appreciation for the medium’s possibilities. An exhibition could be paired with an artist talk or live demonstration, letting visitors experience both the finished works and the process that creates them.

Thank you for considering my work for your gallery.
